Impact Centre and Learning Support

Empowering and inspiring neuro-diverse minds

What We Offer
Welcome to the Special Education Department at The School of The Nations! Our department is divided into two specialized sections: the Impact Centre and Learning Support.

The Impact Centre provides a tailored curriculum for students with learning challenges, particularly those following the British modified and ASDAN curriculum. Our dedicated team implements strategies and programs designed to support students with diverse learning profiles, ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to excel academically and beyond.

The Learning Support program offers comprehensive or partial modifications of the Cambridge curriculum to meet the needs of students with varying learning requirements. Our collaborative approach involves close cooperation with students, teachers, and families to develop personalized learning plans that address individual strengths and challenges, fostering an inclusive environment where every student can thrive.

At The School of The Nations, our Special Education Department is committed to creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where all students feel supported and empowered to reach their full potential. We employ specialized teaching methodologies and collaborative approaches, backed by ongoing support from our dedicated team of professionals. Our goal is to provide an enriching educational experience that promotes academic, social, and emotional growth for every student. Together, we strive to cultivate a culture of inclusivity and diversity within our school community.

The Importance of Tailored Educational Programs
Tailored educational programs for special needs students are vital in fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. These customized programs cater to each student’s unique learning styles, abilities, and needs, ensuring they receive the appropriate educational support and resources for their growth and development. Through personalized learning plans, specialized teaching techniques, and one-on-one guidance, we aim to unlock the full potential of every student, enabling them to build essential skills, boost self-confidence, and achieve academic success. These programs promote not only academic progress but also contribute to the holistic development of each student, fostering a sense of belonging, self-worth, and empowerment within the school community.

Led by our chaplaincy team, chapel sessions offer uplifting messages, music, and communal prayers, nurturing students’ spiritual development and fostering a sense of belonging and unity.
  • Library: Our school library is a vibrant hub of learning and discovery, offering students a wealth of resources to support their academic pursuits and personal interests. The library provides a welcoming environment where students can explore, imagine, and expand their knowledge.

LEARNING SUPPORT – Customized Modifications to the Cambridge Curriculum
In our Learning Support program, students engage with the mainstream Cambridge curriculum, albeit with modifications tailored to their individual needs. Some students may opt to drop certain subjects, such as Kiswahili, to allocate additional time for personalized, one-on-one lessons focusing on specific areas of improvement, such as mathematics. These modifications ensure that each student receives the support necessary to thrive academically.

Curriculum modifications involve adapting subject matter to align with a student’s learning requirements. These modifications are implemented both within mainstream classroom settings and during individual learning support sessions.

Our remedial program aims to bridge the gap between a student’s current knowledge and their expected proficiency level for their age. This intensive, personalized program primarily focuses on mathematics and reading.

Approach to Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
Creating IEPs Tailored to Each Student’s Specific Requirements:

  • Assessment and Evaluation: The process begins with a comprehensive assessment of the student’s academic, social, and emotional needs, including input from teachers, parents, and specialists. This evaluation helps identify the student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning preferences.
  • Goal Setting: Based on the assessment, specific and measurable goals are established, considering the student’s current abilities and areas that require improvement. These goals are formulated to promote academic progress, social development, and overall well-being.
  • Tailored Strategies and Accommodations: A team of educators, specialists, and parents collaborate to design personalized teaching strategies and accommodations that address the student’s unique learning style and requirements. These strategies may include modified curriculum, assistive technology, or specialized teaching methodologies.
  • Regular Progress Monitoring: The IEP includes a system for regular monitoring and assessment of the student’s progress toward the set goals. This monitoring helps identify any challenges or adjustments needed to ensure that the student is making meaningful advancements.
  • Parental Involvement and Communication: Maintaining open communication with parents or guardians is crucial throughout the IEP process. Their involvement allows for a comprehensive understanding of the student’s progress, challenges, and achievements, fostering a collaborative approach to supporting the student’s development.
  • Periodic Review and Revision: The IEP is periodically reviewed and revised based on the student’s progress, changing needs, and any new insights from teachers, specialists, or parents. This ensures that the educational program remains relevant and effective in addressing the student’s evolving requirements.
